I observed a grammar class that talked about how to
use articles. The students participated in the class and answered the instructor’s
questions. The instructor always interacted with the students. While the
students were learning, so was I. I learned that loose-leaf textbooks are great
for the instructor on the move. Since the instructor can take the page out of
the book, they can have the material in front of them while they move around
the classroom. Be serious enough so that the students will learn, but also be animated
enough so that they will enjoy learning. In other words, find a balance between
being serious and being animated. Asking the students questions not only checks
for comprehension, but also brings the focus back to the students. Above all, teach
the language as well as the culture. The textbook for the class mentioned a few
aspects of American culture, such as the NBA and the Harlem Globetrotters, but it
did not explain them, which left the students puzzled. When the instructor
talked about these aspects, the students understood why the NBA and the Harlem
Globetrotters were used to explain the definite article the.
