Today I tutored Matthew for the second time. The goal was to read a lot of the Magic Tree House Book that he started last session without him getting burnt out on reading. Matthew didn't have any other homework for extra practice so we spent the whole time reading. We began with a little discussion about Mortal Kombat X because he loves that game and I want him to think that tutoring is fun. Then we began reading. Matthew and I switched reading chapters. While I was reading I would ask Matthew questions about the plot and details that happened to ensure that he was paying attention. If in fact, he was not paying attention, then I would have Matthew read that part aloud to me. When Matthew was reading, I asked him questions about particular vocabulary words he seemed to have trouble with. We got through about forty pages today and Matthew only has one more chapter left in the book before he finishes it. In the middle of the session we took a little break to watch some American music videos. Matthew enjoys music videos and they provide good motivation for Matthew to finish his book. I made sure that Matthew was listening to the words of the music video because that is important for enhancing his vocabulary. At the end of the session I talked with Shanti about her success in tutoring Matthew's brother. She said that incentivizing with candy worked miracles and he immediately began reading this time. Next session Matthew will finish his Magic Tree House book and I will pick a more advanced book for him to begin.
