I had the opportunity to observe Joan's tutoring session last Thursday after class with Professor Kim's son. I really enjoyed observing the interaction between them on the topic that was being discusses. In the beginning of the session they discussed what the topic for the session was going to be and the tutor began the session with a video about Tornado chasers in the Midwest. She shared that she lived in the region a long time ago and through out the video would mention key terms they used and made sure the student understood certain topics. That was a great icebreaker and way to get the student excited about the topic he will be reading about. When the video was done and they began reading about tornadoes, the student was excited about the topic and interested in the lesson. She made sure to ask if the student knew the meaning to some words which she accessed to be technical or maybe advanced, which helped with making sure the student understood everything. I really enjoyed watching this interaction and took some good notes for my future tutoring sessions.
