Catherine CP #3
Monday night, Nasser and I met at St. Mike's. This time we agreed to meet with all of our friends together. We had so much fun mingling with everyone, since I was there with Tallahassee folks, and Nasser brought many of his international buddies. It's interesting how irony can be communicated across cultures. It functions, somehow, as its own language. It's really just an awareness to a situation and mutual acknowledgement. I say this because the entire time the whole group kept talking about how we should be practicing English. Our purpose of being there functioned as its own purpose. This transcribed into a conversation about social media. I taught Nasser what it meant to be "extra" after we shared our Instagram pages. He did very well, despite the fact that Nasser kept saying that he is too shy to speak English. I think it was a great merging of friend groups. Hopefully everyone will remain in contact beyond that night. It was a lot less rigid than sitting at a Starbucks with Venti ice waters sandwiched in between us. That Monday, Nasser learned the literal and cultural definition of "casual" in American culture: international in itself and common in most casual circles.
