This past Thursday I sat in through Joan's tutoring session with Mrs. Kim's boy. I really liked how softly and kindly she spoke to him, it was apparent that she tried to build a relationship with him - therefore making it personal. She started her session with a video. She had brought in a book on tornados and went forth to having us watch a video on tornado hunters. It was an interesting video, capturing every moment of a tornado. It came from a tv show, so every time a complicated theme would show up, she made sure he knew what was going on. She asked him questions during the film and kept him up to date. After the video, she took out the book and attempted to having him read. He did very well, although he was not too interested in reading in itself.
Overall, I truly enjoyed watching her interact with him. It gave me the opportunity to try to incorporate parts of her style for my child tutee which I know I will be having some difficulty tutoring.
