Shanti TS#3

On Monday I had my second tutoring session with DJ over Skype. DJ wants to work on his speaking and listening skills. I made a list prior to our session with topics we could talk about. I plan to gradually increase the difficulty of the topics. I plan to start each session by asking about his week and weekend. He told me that he met with his friends to talk about going to Treasure Island. Then he told me three times a week he jogs because he wants to lose weight. He had a difficult time figuring out which expression to use for "gaining weight". He started with "I am getting fat" but then thought it was the wrong expression so he tried to think about the right expression. DJ likes to figure out the expressions himself so i try and give him time to think about it. He then decided "I gained weight" was the right expression. I told him both were right, but "I gained weight" is just a different more polite way to say "I am getting fat". After each topic I give him, I have him ask me a question so he can practice listening. He then asked me about my weekend. After we talked about his family, and music. He also asked me about my family and what American music is popular now. He said he did not like Beyonce, but that Korean girl idol groups try and be like her. At the end he told me he had been watching the news about Baltimore and asked me how I felt about it. After I told him my opinion, he told me next time he would tell me about racism in his country. Over all DJ did very well. He did not make any of the same mistakes from our last session. DJ also seems more comfortable with me and is more willing to voice his opinion. He still doesn't think he is good at English, but i hope to increase his confidence a little with each session.

  1. I am so glad your sessions with DJ are going well! I think it's really great that he is warming up to you and talking to you about his personal life. That means he is getting comfortable with you, which is really important for a teacher. Maybe you should ask him more questions about his culture next time so you can learn as well! It is a win/win situation, both of you learning about each other's cultures. I think as long as you keep doing what you are doing, DJ will grow more confident.

  2. I like this method for teaching listening and speaking skills. I was having a hard time figuring out actual materials for this skill. I will come up with a list of topics for my two tutees to talk about and then tell them to ask me questions as well. Very helpful.
