During
this session, my tutee wanted to focus on verbs that use prepositions, also
known as phrasal verbs. Although he knows the meaning of a lot of verbs and prepositions,
sometimes the meaning of a verb changes when it is with a preposition. A few
words that we talked about were get to,
put off, run over, make out, set off, and break up. It was easy to explain the meaning of some of the verbs but
not all of them. From this tutoring session, I learned that some verbs are
better to understand with an experience. I can try to explain the verb over and
over. I can use a dictionary, which may help with the explanation. However, a
person might need to be in a situation where they experience the action or use
the verb in order to understand the meaning of the verb. This is simply because
verbs deal with actions. Furthermore, in order to check for comprehension, I
gave my tutee a homework assignment at the end of the session. Since it is hard
to make up sentences on the spot with a newly learned word, I told my tutee to
make two to three sentences with the verbs that he had learned, which we will
go over during the next sessions. All in all, I wonder what kind of sentences
my tutee will make.
