Today I just tutored Ahmed because Mohammed was out of town. Since Ahmed's goal is to practice speaking and listening today we watched an episode of Friends with subtitles. Ahmed said that he had never seen the show and at the end of the episode he said that he liked the show. I paused the episode to ask comprehension questions. Ahmed said he also wants to improve his vocabulary which comes with improving speaking and listening skills, so also throughout the episode, I would explain any unknown vocabulary to him. After the episode I asked first if he had any work that he needed help with from school. Ahmed showed me a presentation he gave, in one of his classes, about agate and he told me a lot about the culture of Saudi Arabia. For instance, they use agate for beads that all the men have and hold. The beads are on a string like a necklace but they are only to hold and there are only ever 33, 66, or 99 beads on the string. Then we moved on and discussed an subject that he's interested in to improve his conversation skills. Ahmed really likes gymnastics and parkour. Next time I think Mohammad will be back for our next session I think.
