Last Tuesday, I met with my conversation partner
Ilbouldo for the second time. He did not want to stay at CIES because he had
been taking classes all day, so we went on a mini tour of FSU. We walked and
talked, I made sure I spoke slowly because I can tell he is still at the
beginning level. I showed him Landis Green and Strozier (where I work) and gave
him a tour, explaining all of the resources that we have there. I showed him
all of the best spots to study inside, the Starbucks, and all of the things
that you can check out such as phone chargers, laptops, pens, etc. He was very
fascinated by the smart rooms, and when I told him he can go there and rent
them out for free whenever he wants, he was so happy! I introduced him to some
of my co-workers and he was a little nervous. I think he is a little shy about
his strong African accent, but I kept reminding him that it’s okay to make
mistakes because that is the best way to learn. He told me that he is very thankful
to have me as a conversation partner because I really go slow with him and like
to think outside the box. For example, we are still planning a trip to church
(when it is not raining) and he really enjoyed the library tour. I try to make
it interesting and I encouraged him to check out some books to practice his
reading! He is really into soccer, so I told him that maybe if he reads
something he is interested in, it won’t feel so much like work. He says he doesn’t
really like to read, but that is a good idea because he would read about
soccer.
