Catherine CO #2
On Monday, I observed Ms. Marilyn Sohan's Reading Foundations class. Unfortunately, I was running behind schedule and arrived five minutes late to her class. Despite the rules against tardiness, Ms. Sohan was nice enough to allow me to perform my classroom observation. Sometimes I fall back on the "CPT" or "Colored People Time" excuse. This is (perhaps a slang) phrase created by People of Color about our penchant for running late. I wonder how that concept translates into other cultures. Regardless, in the real world of adulthood, it is imperative to always arrive on time. Her class was taking a quiz when I arrived. As they finished, Ms. Sohan would ask the students to show her their homework. Many of the students had not completed their assignment: a true/false assessment for a reading prompt. Ms. Sohan was generous enough to allow the students to complete their homework in class. Ms. Sohan handed me a copy of their textbook and I flipped through it as the class took their quiz. Since it is a Foundations class, the passages were very simple and lower level. I can imagine how daunting it must be for a non-native English speaker to acquire reading comprehension skills. For the remainder of class, Ms. Sohan went over the answers to the homework assignment.
