Kane TS#3
On May 7th I met with P.J for our third tutoring session. Joan sat in on our session and observed P.J and I. Our objective for today was completing his homework that dealt with reading comprehension and authors point of view. The homework consisted of a story about Jane Addams and the Hull house. After reading the story I asked P.J a couple questions regarding vocabulary, this is where things got fun for me. For the most part P.J knew all of the vocabulary questions I asked, but he didn't know what operate meant. At first I had trouble explaining what it meant because I was unaware of the correct way to present the definition to him. We tried sample sentences and synonyms but neither really worked. They confused both him and me. Finally I explained the definition to him and allowed him to use it in a sample sentence. This worked, but I was really unsure whether he really knew the word and definition or not. The last part of the tutoring session involved answering statements about the authors point of view on Jane Addams and the Hull House. The questions stated the authors point of view and needed textual evidence that supported the statement. This took P.J a little bit of time since we had to go back to the story and find textual evidence that made the authors statements true. All in all this was a good tutoring session and we were able to complete the assignment in a timely fashion all while having fun.

I also had a tough time explaining vocabulary. I also tried explaining and using synonyms, but it didn't really work. I tried having him using it in sentences too, but that didn't work either! I think next time I will try using pictures instead. Let me know if you find a better way to explain vocab that sticks :)
