Katie CO #3

Today I observed a group 1 listening class. The teacher began class by taking role and asking students how their weekends were. Then they reviewed the previous lesson which was identifying and describing the main idea. The instructor focused on defining words such as "details" to ensure students had a good understanding of the length and purpose of the main idea. The instructor then discussed what students remembered from a video they watched last lecture. She reviewed vocabulary with classroom discussion. Next she played the audio from the video and told the students to focus on the vocabulary and try to figure out what the words mean in context. After the listening section she put a vocabulary list on the screen and, as a class, they went over the meaning of each word in context. The instructor repeated the definitions of the words many times and described them in multiple ways in different sentences. The final activity of the day was about making lists and the instructor begun a group discussion about how making lists and taking basic notes is useful and practical for everyday life.

  1. I find that a lot of teachers start their lessons by asking about the students weekends. I think that this a really good way to catch the students interest right away and get them to focus.
