Katie TS #1
Today Matthew and I read three chapters of a Magic Treehouse book. Matthew clearly despises reading. After each chapter we would discuss what the chapter was about and I had Matthew write a few sentences summarizing each chapter that he read. I am trying to make Matthew enjoy reading more by providing incentives such as watching music videos in between chapters of the book. If he does the reading well and writes the summary well he can watch a short music video. Matthew really liked this idea. Today we watched Taylor Swift's Blank Space music video and I asked Matthew to try and tell me what the story-line of the video was. Matthew found this challenging so I will incorporate this into other sessions as well because it shows American culture and will help him to see the use of knowing English really well. Future videos I will have the lyrics for him to read along with. After our chapter summaries and the music video activity we went over a worksheet that Matthew's mom provided that had the topics of class discussion for this weeks class and the vocabulary words that will be discussed. Matthew and I went over each vocabulary word and I asked him to use each in a sentence to prove his mastery of it. Next session our goal is to continue the same Magic Treehouse book. Matthew's mom said that the twins have never finished a whole book before and that she would like them to complete an entire book.

I agree that incentives are the only way to get the twins to read :)
ReplyDeleteKatie, this sounds like a tough but rewarding experience, and I hope it ultimately helps both you and Matthew! I wish you good luck in helping the twins to finish a whole book. That sounds like a good and fun idea to show Matthew an American music video and then ask him to describe its narrative. I hope to incorporate similar things into my experience tutoring Jun-suk over Skype. Good luck to you with future sessions!
