Shanti TS#4
On Monday I tutored David at the public library. This time I brought candy and coloring supplies. We sat down and I told him every time he reads a chapter of the Magic Tree House book I would give him three Starbursts. Then when we finished the book I would give him a small bag of skittles. As soon as I told him this he began to read right away. We read four chapters and then took a coloring break for fifteen minutes. I brought coloring supplies so I had him draw a scene from the book and then let him draw whatever he wanted. David loves to draw so this was a good reward for him and a way to incorporate the book into a fun activity. Then we started reading again. David read four more chapters and I read one chapter to give him a break. We finished the whole book and David seemed very proud. As soon as we finished he ran over to his mom to tell her he had finished the book. To ensure him that he was doing well I would clap or tell him how great he was doing after each chapter. David and his mother agreed to allow me to choose the next book. I have chosen Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. David hated the Magic Tree House book because it was boring. I hope this next book will be more interesting for him. I plan to reward him extrinsically with candy. David does not like to read, but feels very proud when he finishes a book. I hope this will eventually motivate him to read more without the need for an extrinsic reward, but that will come with time and practice.Overall it was a very successful session.

Thanks a lot now Matthew wants candy too. But I like this method of motivation, kids are hard to intrinsically motivate until they figure out what they like. I think that candy is an especially good idea for these boys.
ReplyDeletehaha sorry! This was the only way I could get him to read! He's much better now :)
