My conversation partner told me about supernatural events in Africa, such as spirit possessions. One example of this is called a mari de nuit, which means a “husband of night,” or a femme de nuit, which means a “wife of night.” It is when a spirit has decided that it is going to be your husband or wife. This happens at night when you are asleep. He told me that you will have a dream that you are having sex with somebody. When you wake up, you see that you have scratches all over your body. Since you have a mari de nuit or a femme de nuit, all of your romantic relationships will not work out. This is because the spirit will only bring misfortune because it will make you break up with your boyfriend or girlfriend. However, you can get rid of this spirit by doing a prière de délivrance, which means a “pray of deliverance.” In addition, my partner showed me a few YouTube videos about the Voodoo Festival in Ouidah, Benin. These videos were mostly about another spirit called a Zangbeto, which is a spirit guardian of the night. While we were watching these videos, my partner would continue to say, “You should believe.” This is because the Zangbeto was moving in the videos. However, no one was inside of the Zangbeto. It was moving by itself.
