Shanti TS #2
Yesterday David and I read one chapter of The magic tree house. We will continue this book until it is finished because his mother wants him to finish the books because he never does. David hates reading more than anything else. He spent the first 20 minutes of our session stalling by not choosing a book to read and telling me he wanted to read chapter 2 before chapter 1. Then when we did start reading after a couple pages he would stop and tell me he hates reading. Then he would get distracted by something else and want to talk about other things. I kept him reading by telling him after reading we could draw pictures of what happened in the book. We read one chapter and then I helped him write a summary of it for his class. Then we looked over the vocab words for his next test. I would ask him if he knew the word and he would make a guess. Then I would explain the word and give examples. I had him write down what each word meant. After we both drew pictures of things from the story. David drew the tree house. Since it was so difficult to get him to read next time I plan on bringing candy and giving him a piece after reading a chapter. I will also bring the coloring supplies again because he seemed to really enjoy it. I hope this helps keep him motivated to read more next time.

What an interesting kid! I hope that you can figure things out with him! I may even want to observe your next tutoring session!
