Having never tutored a child in my native language before, I was pretty nervous to meet Nayun and her father to begin our tutoring sessions. Nayun is a very sweet girl and it was interesting to see how quickly she was able to respond to her father in their native language but she was a little reluctant to say anything in English to me at first. Her shyness quickly dissipated once we started reading some of her favorite princess and Disney books and she began making jokes and laughing at some of the stories. I let her pick out a few more books while asking her along the way if she knew what certain words meant and if she could point out their meaning to me. We will continue meeting once a week and I hope to bring something new for her so we can move past the reading exercises.
