O'Neill TS#1

On Thursday night, I met up with my first tutee Hamoud. He had previously told me he wanted help with his speaking skills. So I told him to bring some of his vocab with him and as we speak I can correct him and discuss how to use the words, etc. We had originally planned to meet at the Strozier library, but it was closed at 8pm, so we decided to go to All Saint's Cafe. Although he forgot his vocab, when we were talking, I got him talking as much as possible. I made sure to ask questions and as we were speaking, I would be writing down any troubling words. I also tried to correct any mistakes on word usage or sentence structures as much as I could. I definitely have trouble with explaining grammar, sometimes I even have trouble spelling which isn't good, but as I admitted to my flaws, it only helped to loosen him up. Since our first meeting was a bit casual, I told him that next time he should bring his vocab and any troubling work he has so I can make sure there is improvement.

  1. I think that it was a very good idea to have your tutee bring vocabulary that he wanted to work on in order to help him with his speaking skills. I sometimes run out of ideas about how to help my tutees with their speaking skills. I will use this method with them during our next tutoring session.
