I
learned that one of the best ways to tutor someone is to make sure that you have
multiple ways of saying the same thing. For example, my tutee did not know what
the verb “focus” meant when I asked, “What do you want to focus on today?” So,
I tried to find another way to ask this question, have it mean the same thing,
but without using the verb “focus.” I asked, “What do want to work on today?”
and “What do you need help with?” I found out that my tutee wanted me to help
him with his speaking, listening, and grammar. Since one of his homework
assignments was to listen to a few songs and answer questions about those
songs, I decided to focus on listening for this session. I gave him some
techniques that I used when I was learning a foreign language. I suggested that
he listen to the news, but he said that the people on the news speak too fast.
Due to this, I suggested that he try watching kids TV shows because the characters
speak at a slower pace than the people on the news, and these shows are more entertaining than the news. I also suggested watching a movie with English
subtitles in order to see the words while hearing them because my tutee said
that he was a visual learner.
Bria, I found your post very helpful. I had trouble explaining things in different ways to one of the people I am tutoring when he did not understand. I am tutoring him over Skype so he wants to work on speaking and listening. Sometimes when i ask him a question or give him a topic to talk about he doesn't understand. I will incorporate your method the next time I tutor him and plan ahead by thinking out different ways to say things.
