Kane TS#1

Thursday April 30th I met with P.J for the first tutoring session of my TEFL Certification. P.J is a nine year old bi-lingual third grader, with much to say. At first I was a little nervous about tutoring right away, but I soon chilled out. P.J is a very interesting and smart kid and had much to say the first day we met. For the first 15 minutes or so we talked and got to know each other to make both him and I a little more comfortable with each other. After a brief conversation about Minecraft and Pokemon, we dove head first into the assignment. I was provided material to go over with P.J and help him complete the assignment provided by his teacher. The assignment we were to go over was a short story about two kids trading watches, and only after wanting to trade them back. The goal of the assignment was to grab context clues to help answer questions at the end of the assignment, as well as introducing P.J to some vocabulary words he may not completely know. All in all this first tutoring session went well and I am excited to keep tutoring P.J and learn more about EFL/ESL students and the best ways to instruct them.

  1. I am glad your session went well! It must have been nice to have an outspoken child, my child tutee is very shy and I don't always know what to talk about with her. Pokemon is a good idea! I was nervous about tutoring a child tutee as well, but I find that these children are very eager to learn and absorb information very quickly. Leon County Public library has a great collection of children's books, you should check it out! Maybe grab a few books before your session to read with your child. They have them organized by reading levels, too.
