Lane CP #1
I had a very interesting first experience with my conversation partner. His name was Ahmad Al-Zahrani, and he was from Saudi Arabia. First we went to Starbucks to chat for a while, and then we went on a car ride around Tallahassee. It was a beautiful day, and we talked about the things we liked about Tallahassee. Although Ahmad had been living in the Untied States for less than a year, his English was very good. We only had a few miscommunications, and I learned to try to be aware of these things as they were happening. I think I got a better sense of how communication between people of different native languages can work because unfortunately if we do not think we can fully express ourselves (in any language) we opt not to speak rather than be misunderstood. This is too bad, and it's something that I think the conversation partner program works to undo.
