Yesterday I met with Mohammad. Mohammad is a group 3 CIES
student from Kuwait. We wanted to sit and chat inside of Strozier but it was
closed, so we just talked and walked around campus. Mohammad is very nice, and
was a little shy at first but the more we walked around and talked, the more he
opened up to me. I just wanted to use this first session to get to know him. I
didn’t want to correct him too much on his English yet. I learned that he came
here from Kuwait to learn English and then go to a university to become a civil
engineer. Mohammad finds English a little challenging, but I told him that
learning a language is just like learning an instrument. It is difficult, and
you have to study and practice a lot, but the more you practice, the easier it
becomes. That analogy really helped him understand and become more patient with
the process. Mohammad and I are planning on meeting again soon to sit down and
go through his college applications. I told him I would help him apply to
colleges because he says the application process is very difficult for him.
