Today I tutored Henu, a Foundations-level CIES student. She is originally from Saudi Arabia. However, Henu has lived in the United States for a year. Prior to moving to Tallahassee, Henu studied in Clarksville, Tennessee. She has been living in Tallahassee for one month. Her longterm goal is to be accepted into a Nursing program, preferably at Florida State University. She says that she really likes Tallahassee. In fact, she loves it a lot more than Clarksville because here people are nicer and more accepting. Henu is currently studying for her finals. She is struggling in her Listening class the most. I tried my best to help her in our one-hour tutoring session. First, I had Henu take a Listening Quiz from Seminole State College's website (below is a link). I wrote down the link for Henu, and advised her to practice with this, films, and music, as much as possible. Afterward, we worked on a funner activity; I read an ingredients list from a Brazilian dish called Feijoada. I showed Henu how to create a listening chart to build on her vocabulary. Using a T-Chart approach, I told Henu to write on the right side of her chart "words that I know," and on the left, "words that I want to know". I modeled the exercise for her using the ingredients for Feijoada. Afterward, I had us Google Image Search for the words she did not comprehend. I advised Henu to purchase index cards in order to study her vocabulary words. On one side she can write the word in English, and on the other side she can print out and paste an image of the word. Finally, we went over some vocabulary words from her textbook. At the end, I offered her a ride, and we continued speaking in English to each other.
