My fourth session with Kwon went very well. This session happened to take place the day before his finals so we spent most of the time going over different grammar points, reading, writing, and speaking exercises. Kwon is very smart and gets mostly A’s on his work at CIES. The first thing we worked on was writing. In order to get his writing skill up I asked him to write a short essay/passage. I asked him to describe a time when he felt culture shock. I gave him about 5 minutes to brainstorm and 20 minutes to write the response. Over all Kwon’s response was level appropriate. His spelling and grammar are good, but he has a hard time with sentence structure. After we had gone over the mistakes in his writing we started to work on speaking. Kwon speaks well, but sometimes messes up the sentence structure. We went through the basic structure and I gave him some phrases to memorize that he could use in every day situations.
