Thursday June 4, 2015 - On this day, Nedal and I met up in the lounge area of CIES for a listening lesson. To begin, we reviewed the vocabulary words from the previous lesson to see how much information was retained. He could give me the definition and proper use of most of the vocabulary words; however he still struggled with the correct pronunciation of a couple of word sets: abroad/board and expensive/experience. To address this issue, I repeated each word 3 times, slowly and clearly, so that he could hear the subtle differences in pronunciation. After I repeated the words to him, Nedal was able to recognize the different sounds and repeat the words back to my correctly. For the remainder of the session, I had Nedal complete two listening exercises from ESL-lab.com. the first listening exercise that we completed was entitled, "Fun Day." It was an audio clip of a conversation between a father and his daughter about what fun things they should do for the day. After listening to the audio twice, Nedal answered five comprehension questions, proving that he understood the content and its context. The second audio clip was about clothing, entitles, "Clothing Style." This lesson was of a slightly more difficult level because I felt that the first audio clip did not challenge Nedal enough. The audio clip consisted of a young man talking about what clothes he would pack for a trip that he is taking. After listening to this audio clip, Nedal, again, answered five comprehension questions.
