A couple of weeks ago, I sat in on Vicky’s level 1 reading
class. It was a great experience, especially because my conversation partner
was in her class and I got to sit with him and help during the active lesson.
She started the class by making the agenda for the day very clear, and a
phonics warm up activity. The active lesson was a reading passage with missing
words (and a word bank) that they had to fill in. The vocabulary and article
was very level appropriate, and the students enjoyed it. She also did another
activity about phonics using small white boards. She would give the students a
word and have them map out phonetically how to pronounce it. She made sure
everyone understood how to say it and the definition before moving on to the
next activity. She kept a very level appropriate speaking pace and used simple
words to ease them into the language. At times, Vicky struggled a little bit to
have every student fully engaged but I can definitely see that she was trying
her best. I think that is one of the hardest parts about a level 1 class
because the students want to be comfortable and speak in their own languages to
each other, and not all of them may find the topic engaging. But I really
enjoyed the class and it taught me a lot about teaching skills/methods.
