Wednesday June 3, 2015 - Today, Joseph and I met at FSU Strozier Library for our tutoring session. The focus of today's session was on listening skills, so we utilized the resources on ESL-lab.com. We completed two listening exercises form the website: "Joe's Hamburger Restaurant" and "A Healthy Lifestyle." The first activity, "Joe's Restaurant," was easier, and I felt that it would make a good warm-up exercise. The audio clip is of a conversation between a customer and employee in Joe's restaurant. The employee in the conversation spoke a little quickly, so it was slightly difficult for Joseph to understand some parts of the conversation. Even though I wanted the first activity to be easier for him, I felt that the speech rate of the employee forced Joseph to listen more intently on what was being. There was also one phrase in the audio clip that I took time to explain to Joseph: "everything but the kitchen sink." The second listening exercise that we worked on was of a slightly more difficult level. As a schema building pre-exercise, I asked Joseph a few questions about healthy and unhealthy activities. We talked about futbol being a healthy activity and also avoiding fast-food; I explained to him what "fast food" is by giving him examples of fast food restaurants. This second audio clip was of a conversation between husband and wife. And, because this activity was more difficult than the last, there were a few new vocabulary words that Joseph and I reviewed together. Some of the vocabulary included physical, cardiovascular, heart attack, diet, and fatty.
