Today, I met with Abeer for the last time. She had many questions and brought a worksheet with her with a few words to define. I helped her define these words using context clues and examples, and she wrote them down in her journal to study later. She also asked about the difference between "who" "whom" and "whose" and I gave her a few examples of each of those too. I was happy to see such a large improvement in Abeer's English - she uses more connecting pronouns now and her grammar has improved greatly. In the beginning, she was very shy and would use broken up sentences. Now, she can connect ideas and understands how to use adjectives correctly. Abeer brought a newspaper article about CIES and wanted me to help her summarize it and find the main idea. We read through it together, and I helped her point out important points and create little side notes. I taught her what annotating meant and how it changed my life when I took AP English in high school. After we went through each paragraph, I would ask her to summarize it and give me the main idea of that paragraph. At the very end, we took all of those main ideas and created a summary. From the summary, I asked her to give me the main idea. She really liked this strategy and said it definitely helped her. I have learned a lot from Abeer, and have loved being her tutor. I know she will be speaking perfect English in no time!
