Miles TS#6

Thursday May 28, 2015 - For today's tutoring session, Nedal and I met up at the FSU Goldstein library. I wanted to focus on Nedal's reading skills, so we utilized an article from the FSView newspaper. The news article that we used was about an FSU student that was studying abroad in Israel and fell from a precipice to her death; she most likely collapsed from dehydration or exhaustion. First, I scanned through the article and picked out any words that I thought Nedal would be unfamiliar with, and we had a brief vocabulary lesson on them. Here is a list of some of the words that we covered:

  • Abroad
  • Bored
  • Attract
  • During/While
  • Tourist
  • Tourist Attraction
  • Expensive/Cheap
  • Experience
  • Severe
  • Dehydrated
  • Fall/Fell
  • Feel
Next, I had Nedal read the article to himself then read it aloud to me. As he read aloud, I stopped him to correct any mistakes in pronunciation. Also, I had Nedal ask me questions about anything within the article that confused him. Finally, to end the lesson, I asked Nedal a series of comprehension questions such as "Where was the student from?","Why did the student fall?", and "What was the name of the tourist attraction that the student was visiting at the time of her death?"
Overall, today's tutoring session included reading, speaking, and vocabulary activities.
