The class that I observed on this date was Group 2A Speaking, taught by Professor Pollock; the topic of the class was English idioms. To begin the class, Professor Pollock wrote engaged the students in a discussion about idioms. Next, he addressed the class to the three idioms written on the board:"to pull one's leg,""up one's alley,""heartbreaker." Next, the students were separated into pairs to discuss the possible meanings of the idioms. As the students discussed the idioms, the professor walked around the room and offered assistance to any students who were struggling with the assignment. Professor Pollock then asked each group to explain the idioms and use them in an example sentence.
The second half of the class took the form of a timed speaking practice. Two topics were written on the board: "Do you prefer tea or coffee? Why?", "Do you think it is important to eat breakfast? Why or why not?"
Next, the students were required to record themselves speaking their answers into the audio recording app on their cellphones. Professor Pollock then asked each student to repeat back his or her answers to the question using phrases such as "I think that...", "In my opinion...", and "I believe that..."
Finally, the students were instructed to listen to their voice recordings on their own time for homework.
