Kyle TS #11
At first I was informed that I would be tutoring both of the twins, Matthew and David. However, when I met with their mother, she asked if I could just focus on David because she had found another tutor for Matthew. I was unable to observe David when I was with Katie observing Matthew, though I found that they behave similarly. Having never worked with David before, I focused more on getting to know him and his interests, playing off of them in conversation and asking him question after question. He speaks just as well as his brother, if not better, and loves to ask questions about me. Of course. I had to steer the conversation back to the topic at hand, but overall he's quite fun to work with. His mother requested that we find one book, and stick with it. That makes sense to me, as we can spark interest in the whole point of reading which is reading an entire book from front to back. There's no fun in reading some chapters of one book and some chapters of another. I let David pick out a few of the books that he wanted to read, but just so he felt like he had a choice. I found a few books that I read when I was his age, and while they might be outdated, they're classics, and we decided he would read Holes. I think it helped when I told him it was adapted into a movie, but I told him he was only allowed to watch it once he finished. The chapters are really short, so I'm provided with ample opportunities to ask comprehension questions on shorter passages, requiring a bit less of long term memorization.
