Kyle TS #15

Yesterday was my last day tutoring David. It was unfortunate that I was only able to tutor him for a few sessions, seeing as how I had to add him so late to my schedule, because I really rather enjoyed our sessions together. It's not often you get to talk to a 10 year old about how his day went and he always had interesting things to say whether they were relevant to our session or not. We started the session like we normally do with just a small discussion about how his day was and what he did that day. I then had him do a few pages of his 5th grade prep book that discussed antonyms. He actually had somewhat of a difficult time with that, so I talked him through each problem whenever he had a question. I think his vocabulary skills are a little underdeveloped which may be part of his dislike for reading. For homework I had him read 4 chapters of the book Holes and while he said he read them, he was barely able to answer any of my comprehension questions. His confidence is hardly lacking and most of the time that I asked him a question he always had some kind of logical answer. However, the book is not exactly logical. Instead of giving him the candy that I promised him if he read the chapters, I gave them to his mom for her to give to the next group of tutors that he will have. His mother mentioned that she thinks David really enjoyed me as a tutor because he mentioned me outside of class a few times and he actually does work when we're together. I asked if she cared if I continued tutoring him, but she said she didn't want him to be overloaded with all of the tutors. I understood, of course, and I hope that David continues reading the book I assigned to him.
