Last Friday, I tutored Nayun at the Leon County Library. We
read Beauty and The Beast, Lady and the Tramp, Brave, Sleeping Beauty, and
Cars. These were all level one children’s reading books. Nayun’s parents really
want her to practice her reading skills, and they say that she is not very
motivated to read. So, I brought my notebook again and this time I brought
stickers as well. Nayun LOVES to draw, so every time we finished a book, I
would let her draw a picture for 2 minutes. Every time she volunteered to read
a book first, I would give her a sticker for positive reinforcement. She was so
happy, Nayun loves stickers (and these were really cute, they were of children
from all over the world). She was really happy to see me on Friday, by the time
we got to the last book she was singing the words as she read. It was really
cute, and I realized that it’s not that Nayun isn’t motivated to read, you just
have to make it fun for her. If you just hand her a book and tell her to read
by herself, she doesn’t want to. She is five years old, so a little drawing
time and stickers definitely helped. We got through all of the books, and even
though there were some words she didn’t understand, she did a great job at
keeping a steady pace and sounding out unfamiliar words. I really enjoy
tutoring her and look forward to next week. I am going to keep using
motivational methods to encourage her to read.
