Catherine TS#14
Today I met with Luna, a Level 1 student at CIES. We met at the Hecht House, downstairs in the basement kitchen. Luna is such a lively spirit. We connected a lot because we are both from the same region in Latin America. I am from Panama; Luna, Colombia. Luna was very stressed because she had to give a speech in her Level 1 Speaking class at 1PM. Her speech dealt with places to visit in Colombia. She chose to talk about three beautiful natural landscapes: Catedral de sal, Tayrona National Park, and Caño Cristales. I found Catedral de sal to be the most interesting because it is a large church built underground, inside of a mine. It is a religious sanctuary that has been preserved due to its architectural design, artistry, and its nearby Salt Mines Park. Luna practiced this speech with me. I would intervene to correct her grammar mistakes. Some words were difficult for her to pronounce, and I worked with her to find words that were more level-appropriate. It was my first time tutoring someone's speaking skills. I am glad I did because that is my area that needs improvement, as an English Language instructor. This is especially true with Spanish-speaking students. As a Native Spanish Speaker, it is hard for me to discern when to correct pronunciation.
