O'Neill CO # 2
This past Monday I went to two classroom observations. The first one I attended was Cayln Stringers' grammar class. She started class off casually with conversation and then proceeded to review homework. She reviewed connectors such as: because of such..., that, otherwise, and in spite of before giving the quiz. The quiz was based of of last class' lesson. I found this a helpful way to evaluate comprehension and a great refresher of the material. She then moved into the main portion of the day's lesson which involved a video. Before showing the video she created schema building by giving background information on the video. The video was about childhood obesity and was about 5 mins long. After the video she went over the day's lesson which was on certainty modals, advice and obligations. The activity that followed was quite interesting. She handed each student a card with a discussion question and asked each one to go around the room asking each other what they thought about the statement on the card. They were to use the certainty modals recently discussed. A few students came up to me and we had an interesting talk on women and animals' rights. This was definitely a great way to get students to practice their spoken English. Overall I found the class well planned out. She asked questions frequently and interacted really well with her students.
