On Monday, I met with Anwer at Stozier library. We got a study room so that we wouldn’t be distracted by other students. I showed him this library resource last week, and he says that he has been using these study rooms ever since. Anwer brought a reading passage with him that his teacher assigned for homework. The assignment was to read the article and write a summary of all of the research experiments and implications. It was a Psychology article about the bilingual brain. We both felt that this article was not level appropriate at all. The article had many words that even I have never seen or were just very advanced for him. I did not like this article for him, and I felt really bad because I saw him get very frustrated with himself over it. I assured him that it’s not his fault, this article was not level appropriate. But no matter what, we would get through it together. So, I sat with him and we took it piece by piece. We broke up the article and I would pause after each paragraph to make sure he understood the meaning and any unfamiliar words. I would also have him write a sentence summarizing each paragraph as we went along. This really helped him after when I would ask him what the main idea of each individual experiment was. I explained to him what annotating was, and how helpful it can be when reading. We made a solid outline of the passage together, and I told him that we would meet again this week to turn it into a written summary.
