Bria CO #3

I observed a group one reading class. During the first half of the class, the students were taking the second part of their midterm, which was about affixes, context clues, and topic sentences. The second half of the class focused on extensive reading. During this time, the instructor was reading “The Mummy” to the students. Throughout this class, I learned a few things about teaching. Provide a lot of linguistic support to the students at this level. Ask comprehension questions while reading to the students. It does not hurt to check if the students understand the meaning of a word because there are some words that have more than one meaning depending on the context. Make a PowerPoint with pictures to explain new vocabulary because visual aids are important. For a relaxing reading activity, read the story out loud to the students. This allows them to not worry about their pronunciation and to connect the words to their sounds. Above all, Penguin Readers books are great for keeping the students entertained while reading because they can be based on movies, such as The Mummy.
