Bria TS #11

For this session, my tutee wrote a few example sentences using phrasal verbs. One sentence threw me for a loop. The sentence was “The two children were run over and killed by a truck.” Although the sentence was grammatically correct, I thought that it sounded funny. This was because I thought that the past particle of run was ran. After some research, I found out that I was wrong about this. From this experience, I learned that if something sounds funny, just look it up. It may sound funny to me because of the dialect that I am used to hearing. However, I need to teach my tutee academic English. In addition, my tutee wanted to know how to politely ask someone to do something. I remembered what Ms. Kim taught us in class last week, so I told my tutee that the past tense of a verb is more polite than the present tense. I gave him a few example questions, such as “Could you…?”.  My finally piece of advice to my tutee was that it does not hurt to use the word “please” in this question.
