Mr. Wallace's Speaking Class Group 1

Yesterday, I observed Mr. Wallace's Group 1 Speaking class. It was a a rainy day. Everyone came in, drenched. This provided for a great transition into the lesson, as many students walked in seconds after 1 o'clock. He told them, "a tip about Tallahassee: bring an umbrella". He went over the agenda, reminding the classroom of his attendance and missing assignments policies. Then he informed the classroom that they would be answering discussion questions in groups. I learned, for an EFL/ESL speaking class, it is important to distinguish the difference between a "Speed Talking" exercise and a "Discussion" exercise. The latter is more about content and inferences from the question(s) being posed. They were given two discussion questions: (1) If someone gave you a million dollars, what would you do with it? and (2) Should everyone be required to go to college/university? It was interesting to hear their answers. Essentially, the entire class agreed that they would buy a house and reinvest the million dollars for "stability". Whereas Mr. Wallace, playing the devil's advocate, would pose the option of giving that money back for humanitarian needs. It was overall a great discussion and the students were able to rotate their groups, and they summated the lesson in whole group.
