Today I met with Enrique after a few weeks of not being able to meet with him. He had been out of town for awhile and did not have service. Up until today I had been meeting with Enrique as a conversation partner, but today we met as tutee and tutor. During our conversation partner meetings he told me that he needed help with reading comprehension so today I brought in an IELTS practice reading comprehension passage to see where his skill level stood. The passage was about the dangers of secondhand smoke and it had various comprehension questions at the end of the passage. Enrique had no difficulty understanding the passage, but he did have trouble with the questions at the end. I helped him through the questions and he had no trouble understanding why the answers were what they were. Because he had such an easy time with the readings, I decided to bring a different kind of passage to him next time, a dialogue. I think maybe an academic paper is a bit easier for him to understand because of his large receptive vocabulary. I'll try and challenge him with more contextually driven passages.
